Everyone knows that there is a possibility of leakage in flange connections, and there are many reasons for this. However, the direct cause or avoidable factor is the roughness of the connection surface. If the surface roughness of the connecting components can be well controlled, it is believed that it may reduce the possibility of flange leakage. Here we will share with you the impact of surface roughness on flange sealing.

It can be confirmed that the roughness of the flange surface has a significant impact on the sealing effect, especially when non soft gaskets are used, and the roughness of the sealing surface is one of the main causes of leakage. For example, when turning a flange surface, the cutting pattern is a spiral line. When using a metal gasket, if the roughness value is large, the gasket cannot block the spiral groove formed by the cutting pattern. Under pressure, the medium will leak out along this groove. Soft gaskets have much lower requirements for the smoothness of the flange surface. This is because it is prone to deformation and can block the machining tool lines, thereby preventing leakage. For soft gaskets and stainless steel flanges, being too smooth is actually disadvantageous because the resistance to interface leakage decreases at this time. So, for those connections where the surface roughness is too large, we can use a sealing gasket to match when using flange connections, but it is also required that the surface of the sealing gasket be as smooth as possible.
